ah, wit, where have you gone?

so i've got this nifty blog now. i'm pumped to finish writing this first post and go edit a billion different things about the layout... but to finish this first post, i suppose i have to actually write it first. interesting concept. i'm sure i have lots of wise and witty things to say. then again, i'm not sure i do. anymore.

why do i feel like i was so wise when i was young? and i don't mean, when i was young i thought i was so wise. i mean right now, as a college senior, two months before entering the real world, i look back and feel like i can't remember all of the lessons and truisms that i tried to chisel into my memory. for instance, i used to be able to list off every boy i ever dated, and the exact lessons i had learned from each. i used to recant my dating history to younger girls like Scheherazade, ending each episode with a catchy moral that, while funny, contained some solid advice. now the only one i can remember is "don't grind with boys who suck." hm...i swear that the solid advice from the other episodes was much more...solid. let's see if i can remember any of it:

DR man: don't kiss 26 year old men who lick your face when you are 16. your first kiss can wait. seriously.
emo boy: you have to actually like someone to date them
heavy metal guy: you have to have some physical chemistry with someone to date them
skater boi: long distance is a terrible idea
the jew: if you're not ready for something physically, no matter how logical the other person sounds, just SAY NO
army guy: don't date a guy with a girlfriend, and long distance is a TERRIBLE idea
senior awkwardo: don't grind with boys who suck (seriously, don't)
the mormon: LONG DISTANCE IS A TERRIBLE IDEA

hm...i have some pretty strong feelings about that last one, and not just because it's in
all caps. i dated the mormon for two years, and that wasn't the first or last lesson of our relationship. it wasn't even close to the most significant thing i learned; it was just kinda funny since it was the third time it would be on the list, clearly demonstrating that i wasn't learning some of my own lessons. ANYWAY, i think the point of this exercise is that as i've gotten older, my relationships have become much more complex. i can't pull a simple lesson or two from each person because there are too many things i've learned and too many ways in which i've grown as a person and as a girlfriend.

also, you may have noticed that i was clearly in search of a "type" throughout my high school years. i didn't know it at the time. i thought that i just had no prejudices against anyone. time has shown that i am now prejudiced against anyone who is not a nerdy baby-face with glasses. maybe i was wiser when i was 17...
